Climate Change: web resources
www.climatechoices.org.uk
Comprehensive site from Practical Action for KS2 covering climate change,
causes and effects, with lots of interactive powerpoints, activities,
ideas for action etc.
www.green-flag.org.uk
For all key stages. Lots of good materials developed to bring the
global dimension to sustainable and eco-schools work. All relevant,
but specific climate change resources under ‘energy and climate
change’.
http://learn.christianaid.org.uk
Christian Aid’s teaching resources site. Click on ‘browse
by topics’ and you can look at all the climate change resources – assemblies,
packs etc.
http://www.cafod.org.uk/primary/climate-environment
Primary downloadable resources on climate change from CAFOD including
useful 5 day KS2 climate change cross curricular scheme of work, various
powerpoints, a children’s sketch, etc
http://www.cafod.org.uk/secondary/climate-environment
Secondary downloadable resources on climate change from CAFOD, including
Assembly, Powerpoint, ideas for action, script of a drama, photopack
etc
http://www.globalcommunity.org/flash/wombat.shtml
A cheeky film clip with a wombat delivering a global message. Must
be seen (several times, but not more than about 4 or the bossy wombat
starts to get on your nerves!) Useful stimulus for P4C (philosophy for
children), and all kinds of other sessions…
www.breathingearth.net
An interesting little site which simulates world births, deaths and carbon
emissions in real time. Fascinating to watch, another useful
stimulus for discussion / P4C sessions.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afa-2HErL70 ‘Proper Education’. Forget po-faced finger-wagging , this short film to the backing of a Pink Floyd remix is cool, funky and packed with skateboard and bike stunts and attitude. A gang of school kids with bricks break into a high rise block of flats – only to switch appliances off, put in energy saving bulbs and turn down the thermostat. I bet your class love it.
http://tinyurl.com/angrykid I have mixed feelings about this Greenpeace short film clip. Does what it says on the tin. The kid is indeed very angry. Watch it yourself and see how you might use it with your class… (another P4C stimulus?)

info on www.rite2no.org.uk )
A Change for the Better. Funny and thoughtful 30 min film on climate
change for young people by young people - made by a group of secondary
kids in Manchester. The you tube link above works to view the video
in parts or order it from their website. My favourite quote: ‘why
is the future so minging?’ Useful for KS 2 and 3.
http://powerdown.actionaid.org.uk/
ActionAid’s PowerDown website. Lots of powerpoints, video
clips, lesson plans suitable for primary and secondary and compelling
personal stories about the impact of climate change on children’s
lives.
www.ashdenawards.org/schools
A wealth of resources including tried and tested lesson plans, teacher
notes, short films and PowerPoint presentations for interactive whiteboards. Have
a browse.
www.oxfam.org.uk/get_involved/campaign/climate_change/index.html
Three short video stories about how climate change is affecting women’s
lives around the world and the action that Oxfam is taking to improve
lives. An example of climate change already happening, rather than
some vague threat for the future.
http://www.oxfam.org.uk/education/resources/climate_chaos/ A whole week’s worth of activities on climate change for ages 9 – 11.
www.footprint.wwf.org.uk
One of many footprint calculators available online. For adult and
secondary. 5 minute activity to help you work out how many planets
we would need if everyone lived in the same way as you. Gives you
a figure in tonnes for your carbon emissions too.
www.realclimate.org
A site set up by climate scientists where they try and communicate in
language that ordinary people can understand in response to what they
see as misrepresentation in the media eg their responses to the infamous
Channel 4 documentary. Recommended by the head of education services
at The Royal Meterological Society as ‘where to look for sane
science from climate scientists’. Not one for kids but
could be useful if there’s something you feel you need to understand
more deeply before you teach it.
http://www.ecodriver.co.uk/
Ecodriver measures and displays the energy you use in school in a form
that can be easily interpreted and used by students eg for maths etc. It
comes highly recommended by a school in QCA’s case study document ‘Sustainable
Development in Action’ who say that it’s been key to revolutionising
their school’s energy use.
www.stopclimatechaos.org
Stop Climate Chaos is the coalition of all the organisations with campaigns
on climate change (Christian Aid, Oxfam, WWF, Islamic Relief…)
a bit like the equivalent of Jubilee 2000 or Make Poverty History. This
is the site to look at to find out what action they all have planned
and how you can get involved.
www.ageofstupid.net
Not specifically a schools resource but The Age of Stupid is a fantastic
and empowering film and very useable at secondary. Currently
showing at cinemas and independent screenings (find a local one on
their site or even better, book one for school, it’s surprisingly
cheap to do and a great event to introduce whole school action on climate
change to parents and the wider school community). ActionAid
are shortly bringing out a secondary Age of Stupid schools pack ‘Age
of Smart’.
