Linking – Global Schools Partnerships

Support

There are three groups supporting global schools partnerships in the Yorkshire & Humber region. These are:

Yorkshire & Humber Global Schools Association

The YHGSA was set up in November 2002 to give support to schools in Yorkshire and the Humber, who wish to enhance their delivery of the Global Dimension in education.
The association aims to do this by supporting schools in the following ways:

- enabling better access to Global Dimension teaching resources through a Regional Resources Service
- enabling teachers to understand Global issues and methodologies for teaching these through an In-service Training Programme
- enabling schools to embed the Global Dimension in the curriculum and wider school life through a Curriculum Development Grants Programme
- enabling schools’ success in delivering the Global Dimension to be recognised through a Global Schools Award
- supporting schools to develop active partnerships with schools in the South (Developing World) through a North-South Linking Support Service

Global School Partnerships

Global Schools Partnerships is part of the British Council. The organisation, which is based in Edinburgh, promotes partnerships between schools in the UK and schools in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. The programme provides advice and guidance, professional development opportunities and grants to schools that are using school partnerships as a means for developing a global dimension within their curriculum.

For more details go to: www.britishcouncil.org/globalschools

Additionally, the programme:

- encourages the involvement of local communities in school partnerships
- disseminates information on ‘best practice’ within global school partnerships
- delivers free professional development opportunities for school staff involved

Your local Development Education Centre (DEC)

Your local Development Education Centre (see ‘Service Providers’ section in the ‘Teacher’s zone’ for their details) should be able to give you support and advice on setting up and maintaining a school link. They are also likely to have resources to borrow or buy. Many of the DECs in the region can provide training on global school partnership, and on the Global Dimension of the curriculum and how your link can help deliver it. Your DEC will probably also know of schools nearby with successful links, who can tell you about their experiences.
